Since June is the month considered men’s health month and hosts Father’s Day, we are going “all-in men” this month on the blog!

Men can have a John Wayne-type “man’s-man” stereotype, but there are many men who have an awesome eye for design and style.

I have witnessed the work of a carpenter as he runs his hands over a piece of his hand hewed furniture with the finesse of a true craftsman. I have also watched men flip houses that were hideous, and made decisions for the entire process – from floors to paint to tile – and reaped huge profit from the transformation.

In honor of men, and their “I can fix that” spirit, we are going to get hands-on and explore some fun and creative ways to jazz up your bedrooms with do-it-yourself headboard ideas…a project that many guys would love to tackle!

Just Grab Some Pillows!

Take an ordinary mattress, on an ordinary bed, and push it up against an ordinary wall. Then, purchase some extraordinary pillows, from large to small, and stack them up against the wall for a sumptuous, comfy and custom headboard. You can also get a large, rectangular pillow the width of your bed, and hang it from the wall with leather straps for a rustic feel.

Shiplap Wood

Using shiplap to customize a headboard for your bed fits perfectly with a modern country vibe. The handy man can also drill holes from the back and install bed lamps mounted to the headboard where all wires are hidden behind it. Shiplap doesn’t have to be white. Actually, black shiplap makes a dramatic statement that is elegant. However, you can choose any accent color depending on what feel you want the room to have.

Wallpaper

You can trim out a portion of the wall to use as an accent statement behind your bed, and use wallpaper to fill it in. It is a creative way to add style, and an emphasis on the theme you want your room to be. There are so many options, from prints and patterns to murals. Your imagination will be the only limit on you!

Pallet Wood

This headboard takes more work, but yields a rich, textured wall that is an eye-catcher from first glance. Built wider than your bed, is a unifier to merge your side tables with them, which is pleasing to the eye.

Upholstered Plywood

If you like the idea of a soft, plush custom headboard to lean against and read or watch TV, then you will love this one! Cut a piece of 1 inch plywood to the width you want for your bed, wrap it as thick and heavy as you want with quilt batting (or even an egg-crate foam), and then cover with the fabric of your choice! Upholstery fabric, which can be bought off the bolt at large hobby stores, comes in wide widths and is durable.

Worn Barn Wood

For a natural, rustic atmosphere, find old barn wood rich with patina and age, and create a framed masterpiece. Attach floating shelves and it completes your headboard ensemble. Simple. Stunning.

Architecture

Nothing screams custom, like unique pieces of architecture that can be mounted above your bed to serve as your headboard. Mount old windows or doors, antique metal ceiling tiles, old blankets or throws, beaded macrame, tall shutters or anything else that simply calls your name for a place of prominence in your home. Go to sleep each night loving your special pieces.
