Christmas is the best holiday for a decorator!

Whether you are a professional or just someone who enjoys decorating your home, Christmas can bring so much inspiration. Often that inspiration gets cluttered, and you end up with a mix-matched style during the holidays. Especially when Christmas is your favorite holiday it can be hard to contain yourself when buying new items for your home! Hopefully after reading this post you can find your own style during the holidays without losing that special homemade touch.

The overall vision

It’s time to find some inspiration! Maybe head to your favorite home decor store: HomeGoods and Hobby Lobby are a few of my favorites and find a section of the decor you love. They often group their decor in styles such as rustic, traditional, whimsical, etc. Find an area that you enjoy, and as Marie Kondo would say, “Sparks joy!” Another great place for inspiration is Pinterest! Maybe write down a few words that you think describe your favorite things and get to looking around for specific pieces you love.

Also, don’t give up on the totes and boxes of things you already have! Dig through what you have, pull each item out, and see if they fit with those words you wrote down. If there are some things that don’t quite fit or are a bit run down, donate them to a local thrift store.

O’ Christmas tree

The most important part of your Christmas decor is the tree! It sets the tone for your holiday home and brings the most cheer. There are two types of trees; the minimalist tree or the fully decorated tree. Anything in the middle can start looking a bit left undone or half thought of. Either way, your tree can easily fit into your overall vision with the right kind of decorations.

Whether artificial or fresh, flocked or not, your tree needs these four types of decorations to fill out the spaces; ornament balls/ bulbs, special outside ornaments, tinsel or ribbon, and the topper! It’s important to get bulbs of different colors that go on the inside branches. These fill out the spaces and create a more full looking tree. The second type, the special ornaments are the fun ones to curate. I suggest taking a few trips to many different stores to find your perfect collection. The third type, tinsel or ribbon, completes the tree, creating the ribbon on the present look, matching the presents that will soon be under the tree. Finally, the topper can be anything your heart desires! Think outside the box and find something that matches the rest of your decor while still standing out for all the right reasons.

Go room by room

We all know that during the holidays, things can get pretty hectic. It’s important to respect your own time and pick which rooms you would like to decorate! Categorize it by most to least important to you too. The whole home does not need to be decorated! If you decorate by that order and maybe don’t get to the last few rooms before your family comes to town, at least you got your most important rooms done first.

By going room to room, you can also expand your style! Maybe one room you want to be very traditional, the next a bit more rustic. Each room gives you an opportunity to change things up a bit without losing the feel of your overall theme. Don’t forget those few words you wrote down at the beginning, but have fun!

Special touches

Another important part of Christmas is the handmade and passed down touches. Without those, Christmas wouldn’t be the same! If you have kids, don’t be afraid to hang up their crafts made in school, or those Christmas cards from your family members. To make them fit in with your theme, maybe find a creative way to hang them or display them. Another option is to make your own Christmas wreath! Whether fresh or fake, a homemade wreath is the perfect invitation into your home.

If you’re feeling particularly crafty, maybe find a DIY you (and/or your family) can do. Years later, those DIY’s will probably be some of your most cherished decorations! Another option is to take Christmas card photos and hang up those photos throughout the home. Start traditions of taking new pictures or creating a new thing every year. The more traditions, the better!

Christmas ideas

Hopefully, these Christmas decoration tips help you create your perfect Christmas.

Don’t forget to find that overall vision, spend time on your Christmas tree, go around your home room by room, and add those special touches. We hope you enjoy your holiday season and find some inspiration from what you already have and those perfect home finds!
