Tips to Work Effectively with a Paint Color Consultant

Choosing paint colors for your home can be challenging.  How do you make the colors flow seamlessly? If you shudder at the thought of trying to accomplish this, it’s time to hire a home interior color expert. However, before contacting one, here are some tips to help you work effectively with a paint color consultant.

Color is personal in nature and is the first thing people notice upon entering your home. Before contacting your paint color consultant, do your homework.

Look through magazines and clip pictures of rooms where the color is appealing to you. Maintain a file of these images to show your paint color consultant. Ask yourself about the mood you are trying to create in each room.

Prior to discussing paint colors, you and your paint color consultant should walk throughout your home so your consultant can assess your taste and level of comfort with color.

Ensure that anyone who will have a decision in the color is there during the consultation.

Let your consultant know if you are keeping or getting new furniture, cabinetry, countertops, flooring, or window treatments. It’s best to have a leading pattern from artwork, a fabric, or a rug before selecting your hues. Matching the paint to one of them is easier than trying to match them to the paint color.

Advise the consultant of the direction each room faces as you select the paint color so she has a better idea about how the light will affect the color in the room.

Discuss what time of day you spend the most time in the room you are painting and what artificial light you will be using in that room at night.

Once the main family color has been determined, your consultant will show you various shades, tints, and tones of it to determine a hue that you are comfortable with for that room. She’ll also discuss the different paint finishes and how they affect the paint color.

Paint color consultants usually recommend no more than three to four colors in a home.  Including more only serves to make your home look smaller.

After selecting your paint colors, it’s best to test them on white poster board before painting your walls. Tape a sample to each wall in the room and watch how it changes throughout the day.  Many people are so excited they have a color that they neglect this very important step. A paint color consultant can help you select a color that will work in a room but, ultimately, you have to be satisfied with how the color actually looks in the room.

Working effectively with a paint color consultant will help both of you choose the right hue for you!
