Use Our Secrets for Creating the Perfect Room

Are you attempting to design a room in your home but don’t know where to start? Is your mind wondering if you should paint the room first or get the furniture first? Here are some secrets to creating the perfect room.

Narrow down the style of the rooms you like.

Create a folder of pictures of rooms you like from magazines. When you have a good number of images, spread them out on the floor. You’ll start to notice some similarities which will help define your style. Ask yourself, “What is it about these similar pictures that attracts me?”

Another option is to visit model homes to get ideas. What is it about the color scheme, type of furniture and accessories, lighting, and window treatments that you find appealing?

Select a “Leading Pattern”.

A leading pattern is a design in a piece of artwork, a rug, a throw, or fabric. It helps you select your color scheme for the room because you like the combination of colors. It’s much easier to match a paint color to a fabric than the other way around. It can also suggest certain shapes that you might want to include in the room. It is very important in creating the perfect room.

Determine the focal point of the room.

The focal point of the room is the main attraction in the room. It could be determined by the main function of the room, a large piece of artwork, or scenery.

Determine the layout of the furniture.

Usually, your main seating area faces your focal point. If your family room’s focal point is the TV, the couch should face it with a chair flanking it on either side. If you don’t have the room to do this, other options include having the two chairs on one side of the couch or across from the couch. In rooms where people sit, you want to have seating that accommodates at least five individuals. If you are purchasing new furniture, take measurements of the space so you can create a floorplan for the room. Ensure that you measure furniture pieces when shopping and incorporate them into your plan to see if they will fit. Most furniture stores have online floorplan creators with furniture images that you can use to visualize how things will look.

Use your selected colors to pick out your furnishings.

You want to repeat your main accent color at least three times in the room. You could use decorative accessories, pillows, throws, artwork, rugs, window treatments and upholstery to display that main hue.

Paint your room with your chosen color.

The wall color will be the first thing that people notice when they enter the room. Make sure it’s a hue that complements the colors in your furnishings and blends well with the other rooms you can see from this room. Paint the room before arranging for your furniture delivery.  If carpeting the room, you’ll want to paint your walls first and then have the carpeting installed. Any markings on the wall as a result of installing the new carpet can be touched up.
