When Benjamin Moore proclaimed Simply White as its 2016 Color of the Year followed by Sherwin –Williams declaring Alabaster as its top color for 2016, we all thought we’d be living in a world of white. Last week, the international authority on color, the Pantone Institute, announced its two main colors for 2016, Serenity, a pale blue, and Rose Quartz, a pale pink.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Pantone Institute, it is an organization that has the final say on what color will dominate the world of fashion, automobiles, paint colors, furniture, textiles, etc. each year. You should start seeing these two 2016 colors in stores in their bedding and bath, clothing, jewelry, appliances, furnishings, and other departments. Who knows? Maybe we’ll even start seeing more pink Cadillacs!

The amazing thing about Pantone’s 2016 Color Choice is that it is two colors instead of one. They’ve never done this before! How does this color authority decide which color will rule?  It looks at what is going on in the world – what trends it sees emerging. This year appears to be a year focused on gender equality. We see women candidates for president as well as more female CEO’s. Our growing acceptance of blue and pink representing both sexes is also a consideration.

According to Pantone’s Executive President, Leatrice Eiseman,

“This more unilateral approach to color is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumers’ increased comfort with using color as a form of expression which includes a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged, and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to color usage.”

Should you rush out and try to incorporate these hues in your home? If you like these colors and can see them as part of your décor, then go for it. While pale blues and pinks have worked well in nurseries, think about these colors for bedrooms,  guest rooms, and living rooms.

If you have a neutral color scheme but would like to add some pops of color, Serenity and Rose Quartz may do the trick.

Pantone’s 2016 Color Choice has surely amazed all of us. Who would think we’d return to pink and blue after a few years of bright bold colors like Radiant Orchid and Tangerine Tango! What’s your take on the new colors for 2016?  Will you be using them in your home?  If so, what are your plans for incorporating them into your living spaces?
