How to Make an All-White Room Interesting

In last week’s post, we discussed how to capture the farmhouse style in your home. Many shabby chic and farmhouse styled-rooms favor white. White is currently hot for interiors. How can you make an all-white room interesting?

Think of a white room as a blank canvas which you can easily update seasonally or when you’ve tired of it. A white room doesn’t commit you to any particular style of decorating or particular color scheme. However, decorating with white can sometimes problematic decorating with colors. With that in mind, let’s review these tips to make an all-white room interesting.

Select the right shade of white.

There are a multitude of whites in both warm and cool hues. If you want a cozy look in your white room, go with a white that has a bit of yellow or pink in it. On the contrary, for modern or minimalistic rooms, go with whites that have a touch of gray or blue in them. Holding a paint sample or fabric against a white piece of paper can help decipher the white’s undertones.

Contrast the whites in the room.

Paint the walls and the architectural features in different shades of one white color, making the walls slightly darker. This will create the illusion of depth in the room making it appear a bit larger than it actually is.

Use a variety of textures and patterns.

Lace lampshades, a quilted bedspread, a wool rug, tiles, a cotton blanket, wooden candlesticks, a metal tray would work. Use small, medium, and large patterns which have a color in common to perk up the room.

Add architectural features to your white room such as wainscoting or crown molding.

For a more open, airy look, paint the architectural features the same color as the walls. If the room is small, and you want it to appear larger, use different shades of white, and make the walls a darker shade.

Add a touch of black.

Black tends to ground a room and it will give the eye a rest from the expansiveness of the white.  Throw in a black throw pillow or blanket, a black picture frame, or a black coffee table.
