I’ve fallen in love with the KonMari Method™ of decluttering my life!

In the popular Netflix series featuring Marie Kondo, the “Queen of Clean” is inspiring homeowners to clear out the clutter and find the joy in their homes.

After years of being a home stager and an interior decorator, I’ve learned there is no right way to organize a home. However, after watching every episode of Tidying Up With Marie Kondo, I am re-visiting how I declutter a home.

The basic premise of the KonMari Methodis to test your stuff and if it doesn’t spark a joy get rid of it.

The whole “sparking joy” idea is sweeping the country and homeowners across the board are finding new ways to declutter their lives.

Here are a few of my favorite tips from Marie Kundo’s show:

  • Pile Things Up – Take the time to set up staging areas where you can pull all like things together. Stack every book in your home on the dining room table, pull everything piece of clothing from your drawers and closets and pile them on your bed. By laying everything out in the open, you can get a good feel for everything you own. This helps you put your possessions in perspective. These piles will help you come to terms with the realization that you don’t need fifty books on the same subject or ten pairs of black slacks.
  • Organize by use. Traditional organizers often suggest sorting like items together, but Marie suggests sorting things by the frequency of use. That bulky stand mixer you seldom use should be stored in hard to reach cupboards while your hand mixer should be stored in an easy to access drawer.
  • A place for everything and everything in its place. How many times have you misplaced an item or repurchased something that was lost? By giving everything in your home its own space, you’ll never have to worry about not knowing where an item  Drawer dividers for smaller items and cube storage for larger like items are perfect solutions for finding a place for everything.
  • The KonMari Method for folding clothes. Who would have thought the way you fold and store your clothes could make such a big impact on organizing your drawers, but it does. With Marie’s way of folding you not only free up valuable storage space you always know at a glance what you have and use.
  • Make sure everything you keeps “sparks a joy.” From sentimental items to everyday things, Marie suggests that everything you pick up should evoke emotion in you. If the item in question is useful or holds a memory, it should stay, but if an item has not been used or has negative energy, it should leave. I love this! How many items do we keep in our homes that hold little value or do nothing to make us happy? Unless something makes you happy why would you hold on to it?

Are you ready to start putting your life in order?

I know from my own personal experience when my home is in order my life goes much smoother.
