“Where do I place my artwork?” This may be the most popular question that designers are asked. The answer is simple  & your walls will be so appreciative if you follow a few numeric rules.

1. Artwork should almost always be hung at eye level. 60″ is the approximate height for this. First locate horizontally where you will place the picture on the wall. Next, measure the distance between the top of the frame and the top of the wire (at full tension) and subtract this number from the 60″. Divide the height of you picture in half and add this to your number. This is the height of where your nail should be placed.

2. Hanging above a piece of furniture? The bottom of your picture should be 10″ or closer to your furniture. The most common misplacement of artwork is above a sofa. If you don’t feel like your picture will work at that height, it may not be the appropriate size.

3. If you are placing artwork in an area that you commonly sit in, think about lowering the pieces a bit. Offices, dining rooms & kitchen nooks are often great places to lower that nail just a couple of inches.

4. There are exceptions to every rule. If you have a large picture, we’ll say larger than 36″ x 36″,  hang the picture a bit higher than eye level. If the picture is too low to the ground it may feel unproportional to the wall. You don’t want to be looking somewhat down at the art.

The most important thing is to see for yourself.  Measure to see where these “rules” tell you to hang and have someone hold up the art. Does it feel right at the height?
