I’ve been looking for a one stop shop for Interior Design advice, and it just doesn’t exist! My goal in creating the A to Z of Design tips was to help answer all of your simple design need questions in one space! I hope this helps you get started on creating the perfect space in your home.
A: Adding an area rug to each seating arrangement helps group the furniture together and encourage conversation between the pieces of furniture.
B: Build a room around the things you LOVE. You can never go wrong filling a room with everything you love, such as family photos or a particular pattern or style.
C: Contrast! no one wants to walk into a room that is all one color. add some light colors and some dark colors to the neutral palette to pull the space together.
D: Do not settle for something you do not love. Take your time choosing what exactly it is you want in your forever home.
E: Establish a color scheme. For a full home renovation, the first step should be deciding on the palette.
F: Fake height if you do not have tall ceilings. Vertical mirrors help add the illusion that the room is higher, and keep lower, smaller pieces of furniture in that room.
G: Go green! Add plants to your living space to add some color and accessorize with! Plus, they are an inexpensive option.
H: High contrast palette’s work! Try a more saturated color with white to balance it out. When the top of the wall is painted and the bottom half is a white wood finish, it is called Wainscot.
I: Invest in your home. You can find inexpensive options to create a beautiful, eye-catching space, but remember to look for items that will last and are durable as well, even if they cost a little extra. (Especially if you have kiddos!)
J: Join in on the fun if you have hired someone!
K: Keep the kitchen neutral. White cabinets make the space look bigger and brighter in any home.
L: Look at the items you currently own, or want to own, and determine why each piece is there. You should keep items that: you love, serves a function, or has sentimental value.
M: Measure it out! Before ordering any piece of furniture, double and quadruple check the room dimensions, the wall dimensions, and the dimensions of the object you want!
N: Neutral decor is great, but make sure the room still has textures and pops of color to add character!
O: One item that changes the look of a whole room is art. It adds personality and color to the walls.
P: Place investment pieces in the front. if you love something, put it somewhere people will see and appreciate it.
Q: Quit contemplating, quit putting it off. Just do it!!! Go and re-do the rooms you have been dreaming about for years now.
R: Research! Although this falls towards the end of the alphabet, this is the first step you will take in remodeling your home. Look on Pinterest, check out Home Design magazines, go to your neighbors house, walk around Home Goods! Figure out what you want.
S: Splurge on a special piece that you love and cannot live without, it will make the space feel 100% yours.
T: Trust your designer if using one. Magic always happens when you have a trusting, good relationship with the person renovating your personal spaces.
U: Use color Sparingly. Do not let color overpower, but let it enhance the framework of the home!
V: Vary your space in color, shape, texture, and layout.
W: What is outside should be inside. For example, if you always wear The Gap, do not create a space that looks like Forever21. (Polar opposite stores if you ask me!) Let the rooms reflect the lifestyle of the clients!
X: (I’ve got nothing for this letter, sorry to disappoint!)
Y: (Yup, these end of the alphabet letters are hard!)
Z: Zesty! Give your room some spice, some flare! Be bold, and make it a statement! The statement bathroom floor tiles are a huge trend right now, and it is sure to add zest!
