4 Way to Allow for Mixing Patterns Correctly
Do you always use solid drapery, pillows, couches, and chairs because you are afraid of mixing patterns? In today’s post, we show you how to conquer your fear by following four easy rules.
- Decide which is going to be the dominant pattern either by the number of times it’s used in a room or the size of the pattern.
- Make sure the patterns go together. Don’t put a Victorian pattern with a very contemporary pattern. It will create a confusing look.
- Use coordinating or similar colors in the patterns to create a cohesive look.
- Use different sized-patterns. Try for small, medium, and large designs.
Let’s take a look at a few rooms where patterns are used and how they work well together to add interest.
In the room above, the three pronounced colors are black, white, and pink. The striped black and white rug grounds the room. Stripes go with any pattern so feel free to use them. We see larger patterns in the ottoman in contrasting colors. The pink patterns are repeated in the pillows and drapery creating harmony and balance in the room. When using patterns, don’t put them all on one side of the room.
The living room above coordinates yellow with blue. The neutral pattern, the stripe, appears in the chair’s upholstery. The largest print using both colors is in the window treatments. The pillows each repeat one of the main colors in smaller and medium prints. Notice how the solid yellow ceramic accent pieces on the dining table boldly repeat the yellow. Can you see how the patterns in the coordinating color scheme unite the two rooms?
Blue and pink abound in this cheery little girl’s room. The wallpaper captures tiny polka dots, another neutral pattern, in these colors. The blue stripes in the window shade, the larger pattern, bring your eyes up to the ceiling. A medium–sized pink pattern adorns the bed pillows where we also notice a blue border in the duvet cover. The repeated color scheme and different-sized patterns make for a fun bedroom that a child would love to call her own.
Remember to include small, medium, and large-scale patterns in similar colors when mixing patterns. Distribute the patterns throughout the room for a balanced look. Decide which pattern will be the dominant one by making it the largest or using it the most in the room. Mixing patterns can add interest to a plain room.
