Proper Area Rug Arrangement

Are you wondering about arranging your area rugs properly so they enhance rather than detract from the ambiance of your rooms? Area rugs can create a focal point, define a seating or eating area, warm up a room, or create pizzazz in a dull-looking room. To ensure you are placing them correctly follow these suggestions.

When placing an area rug in your living room under your couch and chairs, make sure that the front two legs of the furniture are on the rug. Doing this will make the rug part of the seating area. Your rug won’t seem like it’s floating.

When selecting an area rug for your bedroom, measure your bed and add eighteen inches to two feet to each side. You want a bit of rug extending beyond the bed. It’s common to place the rug under the bed and leave about two to three feet from the wall. As an alternative, you can also place smaller area rugs on the sides or foot of the bed.

In your dining room, you need to be concerned about how the area rug works with the furniture in the room. Your table and chairs should completely fit on the rug. You should also allow for about three feet beyond the edge of the table to allow for chair movement. Leave at least ten to twelve inches between the edge of the rug and the wall.

If you have a large room and need to use two rugs, it’s best to make them different sizes so they don’t split the room in half. For interest, use a common color in both and ensure that the patterns complement each other. In the photo below, the two rugs share a gray color and the use of a small and large pattern defines each space and adds interest.

As you can see, the size of a rug is so important. In general, follow these guidelines for the proper-sized area rug.

Avoid the place mat-sized look. Don’t place your coffee table on a flying carpet like below. It makes the coffee table look disconnected from the grouping.
