Do you have an eye for design? Do you like to dabble with your own home interiors? Or maybe you’re looking for some fresh new ideas. As interior decorators, we understand that not everyone needs the help of a professional designer. We’ve gathered up six of our simplest DIY home decorating secrets to transform your home quickly – and the best part is you don’t need an interior designer to do them.
For all of you DIY Decorators this post is especially for you!
Make a small room look bigger.
Windows are a small rooms best friend. Using a mirror to reflect the natural light coming in will make any room appear larger. Next, paint the walls a light color that allows for the room to seem open and airy. Dark painted walls will make the room feel boxed in and smaller. If you must paint a wall a dark color, opt for only painting one wall and make it the accent wall.
Transform a collection into wall art.
Is your grandmother’s china or a collection of family heirlooms hidden in a box for no one to see? If you love the collection, then dust them off and create a stunning wall art display.
Breath life into your home.
Plants are a decorators secret weapon. They add color to a room, and they are versatile enough that we treat them like artwork. Plants not only beautify a room, they balance humidity and clean up a homes internal air. If your green thumb lacks a gardeners touch, good-quality artificial plants will work just the same.
Don’t skimp on rugs.
Area rugs pull a room together and make it feel complete. Making sure you choose the correct size is critical to the look and feel of the room. A rug that is too large can make a room feel smaller, and a rug that is too small can make your room feel crowded and uninviting.
Too high, too low, or just right.
Want to make your artwork stand out in a room? Hanging it at the correct height makes all the difference. The magic number is three to eight inches above the furniture.
Less is more.
Look through all of your favorite decorating magazines, and you will find that beautifully arranged bookshelves go on the concept of less is more. Changing the orientation of your books will make your shelves more interesting. Group the same color books together to create a stunning display and tuck some light into the space to add character.
