1. When creating a vignette, or accessory grouping, place your largest item in the center, or on the ends. Add in other smaller items in front.
2. Vary the textures (how rough or smooth something is), shape, and size of the accessories you use. Candles, clocks, pictures, books, ceramic vases, jugs, metal pieces, greenery, and baskets are a few items which will add interest to your grouping.
3. Repeat your accent color in the grouping. Remember an accent color must be repeated at least three times in a room to make a statement.
4. Add height by using easels or books to prop up accessories. You don’t want everything to appear the same height. A well-balanced look is attractive.
5. Brighten a dark room by adding a small mirror on an easel. Mirrors are great for reflecting light.
6. Don’t be afraid to lean and layer accessories. Prop a small piece of artwork in a bookcase and place a small vase in front of it.
7. Try to group items in odd numbers because odd numbers are more pleasing to the eye.
8. When decorating bookshelves, don’t crowd too many accessories on the shelves.
9. If you are arranging books on your bookshelves, place some vertically and others horizontally. Stack an accessory on top of books intermittently.
10. Intersperse some greenery in your groupings or bookcase to highlight certain accessories.
11. Place light-colored accessories in a bookcase with dark shelves and vice versa to make your items visible.
