Your front entry is your home’s chance to make a good first impression.

Help yours say “Welcome” with these ideas for giving your front entry a makeover for spring.

Give it a once-over

After a while, we all stop noticing the little flaws in our homes. So it’s a good idea to start by taking a good, hard look at your front entry’s condition.

Is the door mat old and dingy? Are your house numbers rusted or peeling?  Have you cleared the cobwebs and swept away debris recently?

Be thorough and try to look at your doorway as a visitor would.

Make sure the paint or stain is in good condition.  Check the condition of the lighting fixtures, the door hardware and anything else in the vicinity of the door, and replace or improve them as needed.  Spend the $20 bucks and purchase a new doormat.

Play up the numbers

House numbers can give a door personality, but they also have a function. If they’re not visible from the street, visitors will have trouble finding your house.

Get colorful

House colors are usually fairly subdued, but your front door doesn’t have to be. It’s a place where you can show some personality.  Choose a color you love as long as it complements your home’s exterior. If you decide you don’t like just repaint it!  You’ll only need a quart of paint, so this isn’t a big expense.

Fresh pots and plants

Potted plants flanking an entry door are warm and inviting.  They are also one of the easiest and least expensive ways to add curb appeal to the exterior of your home. Choose plants that are appropriate to the light for your porch, and also choose plant colors that complement the other colors in the exterior of your home.

Lighten up

Update your old light fixtures. There are great looking options in every price range.  Exterior lighting can range from single pendant lighting above the front door, or wall sconces that flank the sides of the door.
