Ways to Brighten Your Home

Planning to sell your home this year? Take a look around the interior of your house. If you feel like you’re standing inside a dark cave, here are some tips that will shed some light on how to brighten your home.

  • Use a mirror to brighten and enlarge a room. Ideally, place the mirror on a wall next to a window to increase light reflection.
  • Remove any stationary heavy window treatments if they are darkening a  room or overwhelming it.  Instead use lighter sheers to offer some privacy and brighten the room. If you need more privacy, try a heavier drapery on a rod that can be opened during the day.
  • Clean your windows on a cloudy day so they don’t streak. While you are at it, clean your light bulbs and lamp shades, too, so the dust doesn’t dull your lamps.
  • Avoid blocking the light by keeping furniture and accessories away from the windows as much as possible. Try creating a seating arrangement in the middle of the room if you can.
  • To open up your rooms, paint them a lighter color in a low-gloss finish like satin or eggshell. Both the lighter hue and the paint finish will bounce more light into the room making it appear larger and brighter.
  • Using a satin or high gloss white ceiling paint will also bounce more light into the room making it brighter.
  • Make sure that nothing on the exterior of your home is blocking the light inside rooms. Shape up untrimmed trees and shrubbery and maintain them to keep your room’s light and brighten your home.
  • Remove your front solid door and install a door with frosted or leaded glass panels. Sometimes you can even have the glass installed in the panels of your existing solid door which is less expensive. This will brighten up your entry way tremendously and give your prospective buyers a great first impression of your home. You could also install a glass storm door which would allow you to leave your front door open during showings.
  • Install a skylight to brighten up a room that doesn’t receive a lot of natural light.

When selling your home, showcase its fine features by making it light and bright. A dark home will create a dull, heavy feeling and your buyers will be onto the next home on their tour quickly. Brightening your home will make home buyers begin to feel like your house is a place they’d like to call home.
