Practical Moving Tips

You had your home staged and it sold faster than you expected. How can you prepare for your relocation to your new home? Score a touchdown by using these 5 practical moving tips.

Create a Moving Folder

Buy a file folder with pockets and tabs so you can easily locate business cards,  estimates, receipts, and checklists, etc. Maintain a digital moving folder for information related to your relocation, too. Store any email communication regarding your move in it.

Determine What Your Furniture Needs Will Be in Your New Home

Get a floor plan of your new home or take measurements of the room and draw one out.  Consider using online floorplan sites such as Home Styler or Floor Planner to make it easier.  You can even use Floor Plan Creator or Home Design 3D to have your design on your mobile phone so you can have your floor plan with you while you shop. Creating a floor plan of your new home before you move will outline what you can take; what you need to trash, donate, or sell; what you need to purchase and the sizes needed; as well as where to place furnishings in your new home.

Declutter

Now you are ready to go through your existing home and rid yourself of what you can’t take with you. Go through all of your closets and cabinets and identify what you will sell, donate, or trash. You can sell items on Craigslist, have a garage sale, or sell at a local flea market. Donate items to a charity of your choice.  Most will even pick up your items from your home. Find out where your local recycle center is and take old computers, other electronics, and toxic waste there.

Use What You Have

If you have canned foods that haven’t expired or personal care products you have accumulated, use up as much as you have so you don’t have to take them with you. Plan to consume those 10 cans of chicken soup and use the 3 bottles of shampoo that are sitting in your bathroom cabinet. It’s also a good idea to learn what your moving company’s policy is on plants, food, and cleaning products. If you can’t use them or move them through your mover, donate them to a worthy cause or your friends.

We hope these 5 practical moving tips will help you tackle your relocation.
